KALEIDOSCOPIC BODIES
Film description:
Shot on Super 8, this short, abstract film inverts the historical predominance of female nudes in photography and cinema. Rather, the camera turns its lens upon a male body, subjecting it to distortion and manipulation: a psychedelic subversion of Kertesz’s photography in motion. All effects are produced through analog in-camera techniques or microscopic hand painting. The soundscape, played on the Theremin, is in direct response to the images themselves — bending image and pitch in synchronicity.
Bio:
Sonia Kahn is a London born, New York based artist. Working across a variety of mediums, her practice is founded upon the repurposing of found imagery/ memory/ detritus through experimental image making processes. She predominantly focuses on examining the treatment of female bodies within the collective memory, seeking to re-appropriate their representation in painting and photography as fields historically dominated by men. She is also an avid theremin player.
